1949 timeline

Four pivotal moments, reconstructed from primary and secondary sources.

Paris

Robeson addresses the World Congress of Partisans for Peace. The Associated Press distributes an account that becomes a political flashpoint. Robeson and later accounts dispute how the remarks were translated, framed and understood.

Editorial treatment: display the relevant texts side by side and label uncertainty explicitly.

Moscow

Robeson meets Itzik Feffer at the Hotel Moskva. At Tchaikovsky Hall, he introduces and performs the Warsaw Ghetto resistance song “Zog Nit Keynmol.”

Peekskill I

A benefit concert is prevented from taking place after organized violence overruns the grounds.

Peekskill II

Robeson returns and performs under protection. Concertgoers are attacked on the roads as they leave.

The aftermath

Passport revocation deepens Robeson’s isolation until the Supreme Court’s travel-rights ruling in Kent v. Dulles.
